It’s been a week since I’ve put my hair in mini twists with braided roots. I plan to take progress pics each week. Here’s the first update. I think I’ve made up my mind to keep these in for 3 weeks, so 2 more weeks to go.

An Afro-American girl with afro textured hair. I found a method of maintaining my hair in braids that I'd like to share! :)

Looking great thus far! I usually wear my mini twists for 2 weeks at a time. I don’t braid the roots, nor do I make them too small. Pretty simple routine. Enjoy them!
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
How many hours did it take to do your twists?
I no longer do mini-twists, since it can take me up to 9 hours (prior to my recent hair cut).
I didn’t keep track of the time. I just did a few sections each day over 2-3 days. I don’t put much emphasis on how long a style takes me. As long as I don’t have to do my hair for weeks at a time, I’m happy to invest a few days to styling.
Also, are you able to wash these without them becoming extremely fuzzy? I have tried to wash my hair with mini-braids in, but end up having a fuzzy mess.
I can wash mini braids loose with no issues and no frizz. I braid the length of the hair tightly to prevent frizzing. I have a few articles on that.
I did end up washing these mini twists because the smell of all the castor oil was getting to me. To prevent frizz and unraveling, I put the twists in 4 large plaits. I used a sulfate free shampoo on my scalp only. I squeezed the water through the hair. I then conditioned with diluted Giovanni Nutrafix, let it sit for a while. I rinsed really well, squeezing the water through the large plaits. I wrung them out then used a towel to squeeze the rest of the water out. I left the plaits in for about 15 mins, then moisturized my damn twists and sealed with Shea butter.
I’ll take pics in a few days but I think they look good…not too frizzy. The trick to washing mini twists is they have to be tied up in some way- twisted, plaited, or banded together securely. I can do a tutorial on this. I think hair blogger, blackmasterpiece has one on her blog.
^I replied from my phone and just reread this now. lmao @ “moisturized my damn twists” that should be ***damp***. lol
I love these mini twists. They are very neat, full and thick. Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks so much!
Yes, mini twists need to be plaited in sections, or banded together, when washed, or they will unravel. I plait them into four sections, then wash with conditioner, and leave the condition in. I find that I don’t get frizz at all, or the frizz is minimal. It works! MIni braids are absolutely far more secure, so I think you could wash them loose. That’s a great advantage to mini braids.
Banding them together is a great alternative. Thanks for the tip! I agree that mini braids are more secure. My mini twists only stay in when the ends tangle, lol.
