I purchased this from my local grocer. I was looking for extra virgin olive oil and I picked grape seed oil up instead because it was cheaper by the ounce. I think I spent around $3.50 for a 500mL bottle.
First Impression:
I loved the price. It doesn’t have a strong smell. I think olive oil is more fragrant. My particular oil is a product of Spain. I only mention the origin because I recently read an article on the counterfeit US oil market. Crazy right, apparently a lot of US olive oils are mostly filler oils like sunflower. The oil is thinner than olive oil in viscosity, but a thicker than jojoba oil.
Performance:
My hair is very fine and I think this oil is perfect for my hair. It’s heavy enough so it doesn’t drip much, yet light enough so it doesn’t weigh my fine hair down.
I’ve used this in many ways including as a hot oil treatment. It was the first time I used just oil on my hair in ages. I steamed with grape seed oil on my hair then added some castor oil to my roots because my hair wasn’t as soft as I expected it to be. I did not rinse my hair afterward as I should have. I did a twist out and the next day my hair was too oily and very stiff. I ended up flat ironing with the oils still on my hair. My flat ironed hair looked great but it did revert the some the same day. I know some people use grape seed oil as a heat protectant. If I wanted bone straight hair, I would need to add a serum to prevent reversion in the Florida humidity.
Pros:
This is an inexpensive carrier oil that’s available in most grocers. It’s rich in antioxidants and vitamins. It has multiple uses- hair, body, cooking, aromatherapy, etc…
Cons:
Too much made my hair stiff. I should have washed after doing a hot oil treatment, I won’t make that mistake again.
Verdict:
So far I love this oil. I don’t think I’ll use olive oil again after finding this. It’s inexpensive and will be great in mixes. I used some for my bentonite clay wash and my henna treatment. I’ve added some to seal my hair and as a deep treatment. My only issue is I’m using so much, I’ll need a new bottle soon.
Hey! I just discovered your blog and I love it (bookmarking it right now)! I’m happy to see someone who loves braids without extensions. Other naturals prefer twists but I have fine hair. And I can’t last more than a week with them. I also love grapeseed oil. It’s lighter than olive oil but my hair gets dry when I use too much.
I feel you on all of that. Other oils tend to be too heavy for my fine hair too. I haven’t experienced any dryness from it, but I transfer the oil from the glass bottle to an applicator bottle so I can better control the amount I’m using.
