If you are new to self-braiding, one of the most difficult things to master is braiding the back of your head. It took me a while to really get the hang of it, but now I can braid without a mirror. Here are some tips for anyone who has trouble braiding this area…
- Use a rat-tail comb and make one long, single part. If you part a little bit at a time, the part will most likely be crooked or disjointed. Put the comb down after making the part and gently work the hair apart with your hands only.
- Check if the part is straight by feeling it. Lay the lateral side of your hand along the part and feel if your pinky finger lines up with a straight part.
- Use two mirrors to view the back of head and double check the part. It’s important that the part is straight so hair will not be snagged when styling the braids.
- Braid overhand when starting braids at the very back of your head. The movement will be similar to braiding a cornrow. Braiding overhand with your hands on top of the braid will ensure the braid is directed straight down and sufficiently tight at the root.
- Turn your head to braid the remaining length of the braid from a more comfortable angle.
- Again, use a mirror to check your work. After a while, braiding the hair at the very back of your head will be as easy as braiding the front. Until then, keep two mirrors on hand to check your work along the way.
