I snapped a quick pic to attempt to show the length of my mini braids now. My loose hair is around mid back length and my stretched mini braids come about 1 cm shy of the bottom of my bra strap. Without stretching, my mini braids are between armpit length and bra strap length. My hair’s been in a bun all week so it’s not lying flat.

  1. Pretty! Hey what do you think of yarn braids? Currently, my box braids reach my chin in the front, and collarbone in the back, so they are still short….I want to bun them or put them away, but they are not long enough to do so. I’m thinking of putting some extensions over them or unbraiding them and adding them in, just to get me over this hump. I estimate that my braids will be long enough to pony by the end of the year (hopefully).

    1. I’ve worn yard braids before when my hair was shorter. I like them because they are almost weightless compared to synthetic hair extensions. The problem I have with yarn braids is it’s so difficult to get them out. I find it way to time consuming to unbraid the yarn.

Collarbone length hair should be long enough to fit in a ponytail. Bobby pin any braids that stick out. Try this DIY trick- http://minibraidmethod.com/2013/06/diy-trick-for-thickerfuller-mini-twist-or-mini-braid-styles/ to make your own mini braid hair piece. Wrap it around the ponytail and create the bun that way. You can also do some creative pinned up ‘dos or milkmaid braids if you want a protective style for short hair.

I hope that helps! Let me know if you try the DIY hairpiece.

  2. Thank you! I sent an email to you with a picture of my braids (add about 2 inches to that pic) to your address. Feel free to share the picture (my face is blocked out), maybe there are some other ladies stuck at the same stage as me and it can help others as well, Happy Hair Growing!

    1. I got your email and I see that your hair is very layered. I remember that stage. I think flat twisting the hair into a ponytail might help. There are lots of styles for dreadlocs that use a technique like rolling the hair or twisting/braiding it into an updo style. Hair styles for locs are a great place to get inspiration.

Thanks for the pic. If you don’t mind, I’d like to ask you some interview questions as well so I can post your natural hair stats with the picture. If you’re interested, I’ll email the questions in a week or so. Thank you!

    1. Wow, that’s a lot of progress for only 2 weeks! I had to read that over a few times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Great job. Your hair looks good and is obviously growing and retaining well. Thanks for the mention and I enjoyed reading your blog and seeing your pics. If you have any advice for relaxed ladies, perhaps we can do a collaborative post. 🙂
