I bought a small jar of Kinky Curly Custard from Target forever ago and I have yet to finish it. My opinion of this product wavers. I also purchased the Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in at the same time. I’ve used the custard with and without the leave-in underneath.

First Impression:

The smell is really nice. It’s a sugar based natural gel/custard and it smells sweet like sugar. The consistency is a bit goopy. It’s expensive for the amount of product you get.

Performance:

The Knot Today is a really nice detangler (I’ll do a full review of it later). I do not like it as a leave in however, it’s too light for my hair. My hair feels really silky almost after the Knot Today and the moment I add Curly Custard my hair feels stiff and unpleasant. The juxtaposition is what bothers me most about the 2 products. The Custard on its own, does not feel so bad.

The hold is good. I love a strong hold gel. My wash and goes only last when they start off very firm. The product has lasted me quite a while because I use it sparingly. If I used this consistently for wngs the small jar would probably get 8 uses at most. The drying time is long and my hair feels awfully sticky while drying.

Pros:

It’s an all natural product that smells lovely.

Cons:

The drying time is long and the product feels very sticky while on the hair. The price is high.

Verdict:

It’s very comparable to Eco-styler gel on my hair. I don’t see a reason to spend this amount of money on something that takes longer to dry, feels stickier, but in the end does the same job. I do like the ingredients but my search will continue for an all natural firm-hold  gel.
